Power Management Program

The Power Management Program is designed to promote more efficient use of electrical energy within a facility, thus reducing electric utility costs.

There are many factors that determine how long the Power Management Program will take to complete depending on the size and complexity of the facility along with the scope of the work.  The Power Management Program is divided into five phases.  The first phase is a preliminary electrical energy use evaluation.  This is where past electric energy data, facility size, and operations are evaluated.  The second phase is a walk-through assessment.  This is where low-cost and/or no-cost measures are identified and potential cost savings estimates are developed.  The third phase is a Power Management Survey.  The average survey can typically be completed in a one month period.  Once completed, all the findings are documented in a report along with recommendations for any changes that may be required.  The fourth phase is to either support, assist, or perform the changes that may be required.  The fifth phase is a verification of the changes made.  This is performed to insure that the changes meet the electric energy goals.

The Power Management Survey is made up of two distinct services.  These services are an electrical system evaluation and power flow monitoring.

The electrical system evaluation encompasses inspecting and testing the electrical system.  The electrical system evaluation begins at the electrical service entrance and continues on to the equipment.  The inspection process examines the electrical system from the stand point of the National Electrical Code, industry electrical standards (e.g. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), personal safety requirements (e.g. OSHA), manufacturers procedures, and internal company practices.  The testing process covers the earthing system, electrical service grounding and bonding methods, and electrical system distribution.  The electrical system evaluation provides the necessary information in determining if the electrical system can properly support the present electrical loads effectively and efficiently.

Power flow monitoring is performed using a graphic power line data acquisition instrument for recording and analyzing electrical system operating information.  Some of the information recorded covers voltage quality, harmonics, power factor, and demand.  This recorded information is used to determine power flow characteristics as compared to industry standards.  This information is also used as a base line for energy efficiency measures along with providing the necessary information for determining the most cost effective methods.
